Big results from big efforts, that is the 2005 Gran Reserva. Sourced from the old vineyards in Elciego the fruit post ferment spent 19 months in new casks, racked 3 times and then another 5 months in oak. That’s a lot of attention and effort. The resulting wine is looking for trouble, tobacco, blackberry and cherry smack away lavender and all things spice. There is volume on the palate with precise focussed tannins once all the noise comes to an end. Turn it up loud.
This big bold beauty of a wine demands food, it wouldn’t do it justice not to. We just love a the pairing of Gran Riserva Tempranillo with Roast lamb, studded with garlic and rosemary, served with roasted baby carrots and wild rice with lots of fresh herbs. Simple yet delicious.
The Diez Caballero winemaking journey began back in 1979, unlike many other producers they make their wines from purely estate grown fruit, 25 hectares of Tempranillo leads the way. Their winery treats the fruit like a welcome guest, encouraging but not scornful, just like the wines.
