Tasting Notes

Ahh Montepulciano, a beautiful mid palate weight red wine. Deep reddish and purple in colour, dark chocolate, red fruits and coffee is what you will find when you swirl it around your glass. When you finally get to drink it, I seem to get ripe red fruits without the sweetness. Tobacco and coffee are also present with a slight herbal character. The mid weight palate displays silky smooth tannins which aren’t too heavy.

Enjoy Me With

The silky tannins, mid weight palate and notes of chocolate, coffee and red fruits make this an ideal match with hard cheeses, roast pork, beef brisket or perhaps even a wild mushroom risotto. Don’t be afraid to match this wine with heavier dishes and watch as it displays even more of its character.

Montepulciano as a grape variety is known for its food friendly and pizza matching ability, and who doesn’t like pizza! - Jeremy.

Vineyard in Focus

Founded in 1978, this family owned and run vineyard in the small town of Bolognano in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, is home to 300 hectares of well kept vines. The philosophies of excellence, passion and devotion are highlighted in the quality of the wines produced. The three wines from Zaccagnini that we chose to show case utilise grape varietals typical of the region - Trebbiano Abruzzese and Montepulciano grapes play a leading role. The winery has a sustainable vision introducing practices such as minimal irrigation and a reduction in the use of sulpher. The wines from Zaccagnini hold interesting flavour profiles with wonderful textural qualities.
