Tasting Notes

Morellino is the name used for Sangiovese combined with a small amount of Ciliegiolo. This wine goes through a low temperature fermentation and is only aged in stainless steel and in the bottle.

A ruby red hue leads the way of this lovely warm climate Sangiovese, followed by a delightful fruit nose of cherry, blackberry and plums. A fuller body with a firm, but not over the top tannin structure. The fruit character comes through wonderfully on the palate, with cherry, plum and just a hint of spice, finished by beautiful savoury quality.

Enjoy Me With

Definitely cured or braised meats, or hard aged cheeses would be my pick. I don’t recommend this one so much with grilled meats. Think more along the lines of game braises or ragu - especially if it's part of a hand made pasta dish with served with hard cheese. As there is a slight savouriness to this wine and with the amount of tannin, a rich meat or smoked sausage work really well too.

Vineyard in Focus

The Motta family have been growing grapes and making wine on their vineyard 'La Tartaruga' since 1987. It is located in the coastal area of Maremma, in the South West of Tuscany, with a fantastic set of conditions including soil type, microclimate, sun and wind exposure. Combine this with an environmentally friendly approach to farming and you are rewarded with wines that are very unique to the area. It really is a stunning coastal region, providing a mild climate that aids in the production of excellent wines and Motta displays an absolutely perfect example of this.
